“Do they?”
“Surprisingly, yes, for both.”
Damon laughed and shook his head. "Stay here."
"Where are you going?" I asked, then immediately wished I could take it back.
Desperation was not a cute look.
"To get you something to drink."
"I can get my own drink."
"Never said you couldn't."
He disappeared toward the bar before I could argue.
I watched him weave through the crowd, stopping briefly when someone called his name. He said something that made the older couple laugh, then continued on his way.
The man was annoyingly good with people. He could charm his way through a room without appearing to try, while I spent half my life calculating what to say and how it might be received.
He returned with two glasses of water and handed me one. "Hydrate."
I accepted it. "Bossy."
"Takes one to know one."
I smiled.
Damon settled into the chair beside mine, stretching his long legs out in front of him and held up the glass of water for a toast. "To being off duty."
My brows furrowed. "What?"
He nodded toward my glass. "Tonight. You're off duty. No work, no worrying, no taking care of everybody else."
We clinked our glasses. He took a drink as though he hadn't just said something that made my entire nervous system short-circuit.
"You make that sound easy," I said as I drank.
"It can be."
"Spoken like a man who's never had two hundred unread emails."
"Three thousand and twelve, actually."
I blinked. "What?"
"Unread emails. Three thousand and twelve, last time I checked."
“Are you being serious?” I asked, sure he was exaggerating.
He pulled out his phone, opened up his gmail, and turned the screen towards me. There were actually three thousand and fifty-six.
I covered my mouth. "That's horrifying."
"That's why I don't check."
I shook my head. "You're ridiculous."
