Declan: Pretty sure he’s talking about watching you and Cass finally give in to the chemistry between you.

Me: Not one of us needs this distraction.

Lincoln: She definitely had you distracted on that dance floor.

Jaxon: Right? Did the world melt away, Cold Turkey?

Me: No.

Treyvon: By no, he means yes. It’s opposites day.

Me: Are we four years old?

Treyvon: No. You’re definitely all man. Ask your girl. The way she was looking at you? Running her fingers through your hair and down your face, never taking her eyes off you? Whewee. I hope a woman looks at me that way one day.

Jaxon: Facts. We’re just happy for you, Marcus. It looks like you might have met your match.

Chapter 14

Cass

Oh, what a tangled web we weave,

when first we practice to deceive.

~ Sir Walter Scott

“Oooh! What about this?” Winona holds her phone up with an image of a miniature porch goose on the screen.

The gala was three nights ago. Tonight, our friends all came over to help brainstorm wedding favors and to pick flowers and centerpieces.

“Porch geese?” Emberleigh asks. “As a wedding favor?”

“It’s kind of our thing,” Winona says. “We could dress some as grooms and some as brides.”

“I like it,” Carli says.

“I’m still voting for the mini jars of artisanal honey,” I say. “Who doesn’t love honey? Plus, you could attach a tag that says Meant to bee or Found my honey.”

Everyone laughs.

“We could do both,” Winona says. “Porch geese and honey.”

“Let’s arrange the porch geese as part of the centerpieces,” Syd suggests. “A couple at every table—bride and groom. You can raffle them off at the end of the night to whoever has a ticket under their chair. And then everyone gets the honey.”

“Perfect!” Winona says.

“I can’t picture the football players taking geese home,” I say. “Maybe Treyvon … but not the rest of the guys.”

“Declan did,” Winona says.

“He’s the exception to the rule,” I say.

My mind drifts to Marcus. He wouldn’t be caught dead with a porch goose.

He also couldn’t be more diametrically opposed to my sister’s fiance. They’re total opposites.

I’ve been living with Winona’s effusive excitement over how romantic Marcus and I looked on the dance floor at the gala and how he couldn’t keep his eyes off me all night.
