"Louise will do—"

"You are to attract no attention, speak only when necessary, refrain from demonstrating any unusual ability, volunteer no personal information, and, above all, do nothing memorable."

She raised her voice. "Is Lord Saint John aware that I am directly behind him?"

Rodrick's shoulders moved once.

James followed her gaze. "I believe so."

"And he possesses the ability to speak?"

"I have frequently observed it."

Louise pressed her lips together. "Then perhaps he might tell me this himself."

Rodrick lifted one hand without looking back.

James immediately nodded. "His lordship adds that responding to provocation also qualifies as attracting attention."

Louise stared at Rodrick's back. "You cannot possibly have understood that gesture."

"I have been in his service for twelve years."

Another flick of Rodrick's fingers.

James glanced at it. "And he asks that you refrain from staring at him with murderous intent."

She urged her horse forward half a stride. "If you have something to say to me, you could turn around and say it."

"I am conserving my voice," Rodrick called over his shoulder.

James nodded gravely. "Campaign economy."

Louise's horse tossed its head when her grip tightened on the reins.

She released them.

Rodrick had spent a week teaching her that hands transmitted irritation directly into a horse's mouth. Apparently he intended to make practical use of the lesson by irritating her whenever possible.

Louise glanced at James again and noticed the saber hanging along his saddle. "Are you coming with us, Mr. Fletcher?"

James looked faintly surprised. "I always accompany his lordship."

Louise glanced toward Rodrick. "Even to war?"

"Especially to war. Wartime receives the most generous salary additions."

Ahead of them, Rodrick made a sound of disbelief. "You extorted those additions."

James did not raise his voice. "I negotiated under hazardous conditions."

"You threatened to resign in Lisbon."

"I was surrounded by French artillery."

"You were in a hotel."

"The windows faced east."
