“Good to know.” I attempt to process how I can use this. “Can you do all that now?”

Alok snorts. “No, he nerfed himself.”

“Okay. Can you at least look human, too?” I ask Alok frustratingly.

“I am not subjecting myself to such a state. Only an idiot willingly weakens himself. Possessing you is still our best option.” I look back at him to see that he’s smiling at Kai.

“There has to be another way,” Jack moans.

Trying to think of any other option, I come up empty. That may be the best course of action as long as it’s temporary, and it could provide us a certain element of surprise if needed.

“Kai is right. It’s the only way.”

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” Jack says, shrinking in his seat.

“And here I thought you missed me,” Alok teases.

“I don’t think anyone would miss you,” Kai says.

“So ungrateful, here I am helping you all and this is the thanks I get,” Alok says with a pout.

“I’m surrounded by idiots,” Kai says.

I suppose we agree on more than I originally thought.

CHAPTER 29 CADE

“I can’t, I fucking won’t!” Jack says, shaking his head.

“Who said you have a choice, sweetheart?” Alok says, grabbing Jack’s seat.

“Jack,” I say calmly. “We need to be as inconspicuous as possible; I don’t like the idea either. But—”

“Could we at least consider other options? We could stuff him in a carry-on bag, or maybe he could hop into you, or Kai.”

“Not happening,” Kai says, his voice stern.

“It will only be temporary. Just on the flight.”

Jack shifts uncomfortably in his seat, like he is reliving the experience all over again.

“Was it that bad?” I ask.

“No, it was more like I was sleeping, I didn’t even realize what was happening.”

“You were in your subconscious. Nice and cozy,” Alok says.

“Fuck you!” Jack spits.

“Well, damn, I was going to suggest a different route but fine.” Alok sits back in his seat.

“What do you mean?” I ask.

“Well, I would still have to possess him but I would be more like a passenger. He will hear me, but he would still have full control over his body.”

“It’s perfectly safe, as long as you don’t have magic…” Kai says, as if a warning.

“Never possess other magical beings; you could get stuck if they don’t want to let you out,” Alok says as if it’s obvious.
