“We make a pretty good team, you and me,” I tell her. “How could I ever quit that?”

Scarlett’s spine straightens, and a smile plays at her lips.

“We need to get a move on,” Bowman says when he gets back in the van.

The van starts to move. We pull out of the hotel’s drop-off area.

Scarlett leans forward. “Sir, let me finish this operation. We’re so close.”

“My hands are tied,” Bowman says.

She nods. “Then you leave me no choice.” To the driver, she says, “Pull over.”

Bowman warns, “Dammit, Payne, don’t—”

“I’m not arrested, right?” she asks. “Pull. Over.”

The van comes to a sharp stop as Scarlett pulls on the door handle and gives me a quick look over her shoulder.

“I’m going to finish what Sadistic Santa started,” she says.

Then she’s gone.
