Fiona shot me a dry grin, then looked at Ivy. “Did you know?”

Ivy’s expression turned sheepish. “I suspected, but how did you figure that out?”

Fiona’s grin became smug. “Because of how you kept bringing up Heidi and Block at Christmas when your man complained about Mick staying here.”

Ivy pressed her lips together. “I didn’t think I was that obvious.”

More muffled sounds of voices came from the direction of the conference room before there was a harsh whistle.

Trixie looked at me. “Go.”

“I’m heading to On a Lark - it’s where I was supposed to be anyway. When they get out, please let Tundra know, if you can,” I said.

Fiona glanced at Ivy. “You’d do well to vamoose, too. Gamble’s smart, and his sons are the same way. Nickel’s gonna catch on to you knowing what was up.”

Ivy shook her head. “But I didn’t know. I just knew they had words back in September, and it’s more like I was holding out hope.”

Chapter 22

Lay the World at Her Feet

Gamble stormed out of the room before the gavel hit the table. I couldn’t let him lay into my woman in this state. The room was emptying fast.

I moved one step before Roman stopped me. “Let him talk to her.”

“I’ll do that, but I’m gonna be there, now let me pass,” I said.

I made it to the exit at the same time as Lark. “You got some fuckin’ nerve acting like you didn’t have a problem with us, only to pull a two-faced stunt and make this harder on her.”

“She did this to herself,” Lark said.

“The hell she did, and you damn sure could have left Biloxi out of it.”

He stopped and stared at me. “Nope. One meet - everything’s done. Go see to Mick. She’s already late for her shift.”

Block, Tiny, and Nickel were leaning against the wall of the corridor, waiting.

Tiny stepped forward. “You kept your patch, and she’s still got her dream. But you do her wrong, and I’ll end you.”

“I’d end myself first.”

His brows ticked up and down. “Those are just words, man.”

Block came toward me once Tiny ambled away.

All the air in my lungs rushed out when he planted his fist in my gut.

“That’s for hiding this and puttin’ that gir— woman in a precarious position.”

I struggled to get my breath back. After another minute, I nodded at him.

Nickel glared at me. “You should have left her alone.”

I straightened. “That goes both ways. If you think I’m taking your fists, you’re wrong.”

“Why? Am I too young?”
