Make or Break

I gave him a sardonic smile. “Yes. What’s the problem?”

He scowled. “No problem. Get with the program. You’re imitating a robot or some shit and scaring the customers.”

“Make a pot of that coffee I brought you,” Ryan said from the other side of the bar.

Since my brother took Ivy out to New Orleans on Christmas Eve, he gave me three big bags of Chicory coffee for Christmas. I loved that stuff and loved even more that I had a brother who could be so thoughtful.

But they were both wrong. I wasn’t a robot and I wasn’t tired. I suffered from a Tundra withdraw. It felt like a hangover that would never let up.

I ignored them both and threw myself into my work for the rest of the night.

After work, I went straight home, took a shower, and put on a pair of pajamas. I opened my fridge and opted for a bagged salad instead of making anything new. While I ate my Caesar salad, I pulled up my contacts on my phone.

I had a handful of girlfriends, but London and I were close.

She picked up on the first ring. “I was wondering what happened to you.”

“Sorry, I should have called on Christmas.”

“No worries, you know that. As big as your family is, you were definitely busy.”

“Did you have a good holiday?” I asked.

“Yep. You sound funny. Almost far away, but not because of the connection.”

I sighed. “Have you ever had a fling?”

Her chuckle said she had. “Clarify, hon. Are we talking you want to have one or you already had one?”

I closed my eyes for a beat. “Why are you so smart?”

“Because we don’t suffer fools. Now spill.”

“I had one - over Christmas.”

She paused. “Really? Two nights?”

“Four.”

“Ooh-wee. Girl, that’s stretching it for a fling.”

I nodded. “And that’s probably why I feel so fucked-up.”

“More like you got thoroughly fucked.”

“Be real, London.”

“Yeah. Mine was over a weekend and out of town. Did this happen in town?”

“You know that guy, Tundra, I’ve told you about?”

I heard her sharp inhale. “Mickayla, you didn’t. He’s living—”

“She kicked him out on the twenty-third.”

“What a bitch.”

“And she cheated.”
