“I’m always careful,” I said with a grin.

Enzo snorted, crossing his arms, looking at me like he would love to smack me in the face.

“No, you’re not,” he said with a huff. “If you had been careful when you were murdering Phil, you wouldn’t be in a relationship right now.”

I grinned.

“I call it a happy accident.”

“A happy accident?” He quirked an eyebrow, his voice filled with sarcasm. “Right. You slipped on blood and fell face-first into Doctor Death!”

“Sometimes, you just have to let whatever comes, come.”

Enzo smirked. Shit. I had given him the opening, and now I had to be here to hear that!

“Who is coming? You? You do look like you’re coming a lot.”

He looked so pleased with himself.

“Fuck you.”

“Doctor Death looks like a jealous woman. She won’t like it if I fuck you.”

“She definitely won’t.”

“And you sound so fucking smug about it,” Enzo said, rolling his eyes. “I’m just sitting here thinking about that time you said—what was it again? Oh, yeah. Relationships are a distraction. Remember Vanessa?”

I shrugged. “I tried. I failed. Yara is not a distraction. She’s the main focus of my life now.”

Enzo slapped his forehead, looking like he wanted to faint now.

“What the fuck happened to you?” Enzo shuddered.

“What?” I asked. “I’m being honest.”

“You sound like a fucking greeting card.” He made a face. “A greeting card no one wanted to buy. The one that was sitting on the rack when everything else was sold out.” He took a step back. “I can’t catch whatever you have got.”

Laughing, I turned toward the door.

“I have to leave now. Mason will be waiting for us to murder him.”

“This is… Couple goals,” he said with a snort, opening the door for me when Irene came out.

“Are you leaving?” she asked, taking the last bite of pizza.

“Yes.”

She looked at me like she wanted to say something, but then stopped herself. She shifted from foot to foot, looking ready to sprint.

She was so freaking obvious.

“Yes. I have to pick up Yara from work,” I said.

Irene’s lips went flat. “No one asked you,” she said.

“I was just talking to myself.”

“I don’t believe it.”
