“How are you feeling?”
“Rested.”
York grinned wider. “Every time I rode by the SUV and glanced inside, you were tucked so low that I couldn’t spot you.”
“I’m wide awake now.”
York kissed me as he wrapped my body closer. I enjoyed his affection, despite knowing it would be interrupted soon.
Rather than my parents breaking up the party, Zodiac showed up to end the make out session. As his president’s voice echoed through the house, York freed his lips from mine. I heard Elle’s voice next and what sounded like a pissed Trent.
“Zodiac has a key and the security code,” York muttered.
Stroking his jaw, I murmured, “I get to meet your dog.”
York lost his scowl and sat up. He helped me get oriented on my crutches before leaving the room. I turned the corner to find Zodiac standing in the family room with Trent against his chest. The boy was red-faced, sniffling, and holding onto his father’s ear. Elle stood in the kitchen, making a bottle. Her eight-year-old son, Sutter Cane, got comfortable on the couch and pulled out his reading tablet.
“Is everything okay?” I asked when no one spoke.
Elle called out, “I’m going to hug all over you once I get Trent settled!”
I sat in a comfy recliner and hit the button on the leg rest.
Sutter Cane’s gray eyes studied my black-and-red walking boot before he asked, “Does it hurt?”
“A little, but it’s getting better.”
“Those men from the grocery store hurt you. The same ones that tried to hurt Mom.”
“Yes.”
“Zodiac said they’re dead,” Sutter said and glanced at his stepdad.
As Trent gripped his father’s ear, Zodiac explained, “The fucks are buried in Baton Rouge cemeteries. They’ll never hurt anyone again.”
Sutter gave Zodiac an approving nod. Elle appeared from the kitchen and walked over to me. Squatting next to the chair, she studied me with her lovely gray eyes. I had missed her since she moved to Baton Rouge. The idea of us living in the same town again was definitely appealing.
“You look happy,” Elle told me.
“So do you.”
“These Black Rainbow assholes aren’t so bad,” Elle announced and stood.
Walking to a smirking Zodiac, she took Trent and sat next to Sutter. York found his voice once the baby began drinking from his bottle.
“Where’s Junior?”
Zodiac answered, “In the SUV with Hobbs. I wasn’t sure if you wanted him running loose yet.”
Nodding, York gestured for Zodiac to go with him out front. Once they were gone, Elle grinned at me.
“York Lacroix, huh?” she mocked. “Why didn’t you say anything?”
“I’m private, and Sabrina is nosy.”
“True. Everyone is worried that you’ll move here.”
“I probably will.”
