“I want to sleep with you tonight, but your dad says we should let York take care of you.”
I glanced at York watching us. He was in his sulky-man mode, meaning he didn’t react to anything around him.
“I want to try sharing a bed with York,” I told my mom. “If he can’t take care of me or I need you, I’ll call you for help.”
Yarrow gave me a soft smile. “He killed people to save you. I like him. You should ask him to marry you and move into the Sorority House.”
Glancing at York, I said, “He’ll never do that.”
“Not the last part, but that’s why you make it part of the negotiations. Once you give up him moving into this house, he’ll feel like he’s won something.”
“You should have been a lawyer.”
“That sounds like a lot of school, so no.”
Yarrow leaned down and kissed my forehead. “I want you to be okay. I was so happy when Boone got together with Nova. I love being a grandma. Their wedding was so beautiful. Now, she’s having a baby. Everything was good, but it can’t stay good unless you’re okay.”
“I just need rest.”
“No, you need help staying off your foot. Blackjack explained how the surgery won’t work right if you walk too soon.”
“I’ll be careful.”
“No, you won’t. You’re stubborn like me. You need to be weak like your dad.”
I grinned wider and glanced at my dad in the kitchen. Blackjack couldn’t hear us, but I sensed he knew Mom was getting rattled. Joining us, he leaned over and kissed my forehead.
“What’s happening?”
“I’m explaining that I’ll ask for help if York can’t take care of me tonight.”
Yarrow’s blue eyes shone with worry. “I think she’ll let him bully her, and her foot won’t heal.”
“No,” I insisted.
My brother joined us and leaned over me.
“Nova suggested we hire a nurse,” Boone said. “A night nurse can make sure you get your meds. She can even wipe your ass at midnight.”
I aggressively grabbed his shirt, making him laugh. Nova saw her man in danger and hurried over to lean over the back of the couch next to him.
“Did you tell her about the nurse idea?”
“Come closer,” I said to Nova. “I want to grab your shirt.”
The sweetheart nearly obeyed me before coming to her senses. “No.”
“Selfish,” I hissed.
“We want you to be okay,” Boone said while Skylar and Lyric jumped onto the back of the couch to see what was going on. “We love you.”
Skylar reminded me, “You’re my aunt.”
“Mine, too,” Lyric said, wagging her head and making her Piglet hat shake.
“No,” I grunted and released my brother’s shirt. “Don’t you dare use these adorable children to guilt me into hiring a nurse.”
“We’d hire her,” Blackjack offered. “Just in the evenings and to help you shower.”
