You Are Mine

‘No.’

‘Could you give a description? If she’s local we’ll probably be able to locate her. I wonder if she’s had the same experience as you.’

‘Mid-twenties,’ Mary said. ‘Dark hair, long and quite unstructured but fashionable. I think they call it the wolf cut?’

Gray shrugged and ran his hand through his thinning hair. ‘Don’t look at me. I have no idea.’

‘Probably five nine? Quite tall. Green eyes, athletic build. And when I saw her, utterly terrified.’

Gray made some notes. ‘I’ll ask the other officers. If she’s from Barrow we’ve got a good chance of locating her.’ He tapped the two notes in his hand. ‘As for these? It is unusual. I’ll put out a request to see if there’s been anything similar elsewhere.’

‘What can you do with them?’ Ryan said. ‘DNA testing? Determine what printer printed them?’

‘Not really,’ Gray said. ‘We might be able to match them to a printer, if we had the printer – but we’d need a suspect for that. Likewise for any DNA. Plus’ – he paused – ‘I’m not even sure what crime has been committed.’

‘Going into someone’s car?’ Ryan said.

‘Hardly a major felony. The notes are weird, but they’re not threatening. Not specifically, anyway.’

‘So you’re saying there’s nothing you can do?’ Ryan shook his head in exasperation.

‘For now, yes,’ Gray said. ‘But there are two things about these notes that strike me as odd.’

‘Which are?’ Mary said.

‘One, they’re very specific. The stuff about asking Ryan why he married you, about you questioning him before you got married. It’s strange that someone would be so specific.’

‘Because it limits who it could be?’ Mary said.

Gray nodded. ‘Right. Which suggests they want you to think it’s one of a small group – maybe a group that excludes them.’

‘So it’s someone that knows this stuff, but thinks we don’t know they know?’ Mary said.

‘That’s one possibility.’ Gray sucked in his bottom lip. ‘The other is that they want you to guess who it is.’

‘Why?’ Ryan said.

‘I don’t know.’

‘I can only think of two people who were at all the places and who I’m certain know about me and Ryan,’ Mary said.

Gray looked at her. ‘And they are?’

‘Rona and Byron.’

‘And Carl,’ Ryan said. ‘Carl, your ex-boyfriend, who came back to Barrow recently. He was at both places.’

‘I don’t know for sure he knows about us.’

‘He could find out. Easily.’

‘Tell me more about him,’ Gray said.

‘Carl Langton,’ Mary said. ‘We were at high school together and we dated, for a few months.’

‘Did you end it or did he?’ Gray said.

‘I did, but I can assure you he isn’t still holding a candle for me.’
