I squint toward the corner of the gym.

“Evangeline?”

Another rustle.

I put my hands on my hips.

“If that's you two, I swear I'm not above assigning detention!”

Okay, that's mostly a lie.

I am absolutely above assigning detention if it involves an argument.

But they don't know that.

Probably.

“I know you're out here!”

Nothing.

Little jerks.

I turn back.

And freeze.

The Wolf is gone.

Just—

Gone.

“What the...”

I scan the trees. There is no way something that enormous could disappear that fast.

“Hello?”

No Wolf.

No movement.

No black fur.

Nothing except moonlight filtering through the trees. And an inexplicable sadness hits me.

But that’s right before a man steps out of the shadows.

I nearly scream.

“Shit!”

My hand flies to my chest.
