“Wait, the will.” Hilda looks at me. “You need the will.”
“Right now?”
“If they make this a crime scene, we won’t be able to get it.”
“I’ve got the will,” Sawyer says. “Get Presley to the ambulance as soon as it gets here.
“No, I’ll go,” Ryker says. “Get Dahlia and Presley out.”
“Ryker—” I start, hating the idea of being away from him for even an instant.
The distance…it’s too much. I just got him back.
He cups my cheek. “Go with Sawyer, Dahlia.”
“Let me come with you.”
“No. You need to get out. But I promise, I’ll be right back.”
I blink away tears as I stare up at him. Then, because I know every second counts, I nod.
“Take this,” Presley says as he shoves his gun into Ryker’s hand.
“Thanks.”
“This way.” Hilda starts up the stairs, and Ryker glances back at me. He smile softly, then disappears from view.
“Come on, Dahlia. Let’s get you out of here,” Sawyer says.
Chapter 35
Ryker
Ifollow right behind Hilda, all while my heart goes in the opposite direction.
Leaving Dahlia is torture, but her best chance is getting out of here, and getting her hands on this will.
“Coming out hot,” I hear Sawyer through the earpiece.
“You’re clear,” Cowboy replies.
Thank You, Lord. I breathe easier, knowing they’re safe.
Ahead, Hilda rushes down the hall.
In a blur of movement, someone swings a baseball bat from an open door. My movements are slowed thanks to the accident last night, and I don’t have time to stop it before the hard wood slams into my chest.
I fall backward, momentarily stunned.
José comes out, face bloodied, a snarl on his expression. “Did you really think you would get away?” he asks. “Oh, I’m going to enjoy this.” He raises the bat.
Hilda throws a vase at him, and he glances back at her long enough to give pause. I slam my boot into his chest. The stitches in my side tear, and a searing pain is followed by warm liquid trickling from the wound. But I shove it down and focus only on the task at hand.
Destroy.
I get to my feet and rush forward, landing on top of him.
“Status!” Cap yells through the coms.
