“I’ll talk to Justine.”
Why did I offer to do that? I didn’t want to do favors for Penny. I didn’t even want her here. She was a threat to my entire existence.
“Thanks, Maya. You’re the best boss ever. I mean that.”
The Fates made Attila the Hun look like the best boss ever, so I took the compliment with a grain of salt.
“You have Judd to thank. Everything I learned about being a boss, I learned from him.”
Penny stroked the cat’s back. I was a little miffed that Jinx allowed it without a hiss or a swipe. Traitor.
“You shouldn’t be alone,” Dr. Adam advised. “We need to watch for signs of a concussion.”
“I can stay with her,” Penny piped up.
“You can’t,” I told her. “Someone needs to be on duty.”
“I don’t mind staying,” Dr. Adam said. “Or I can call someone for you, if you’d prefer.”
“I’ll call Meemaw,” I lied. “You two are free to go.” No way would I be monitored for a full day. I needed my quiet time to recharge.
“If you’re sure,” he said.
“Absolutely.”
The druid consulted his watch. “I should probably grab a bite now anyway. I’m famished.”
“I haven’t eaten either,” Penny said.
“You made a casserole,” I pointed out.
Penny blinked. “For you. I didn’t eat any of it.”
“Take her to Breakers,” I suggested. “They have excellent brioche French toast.” Bonus points because it was the closest restaurant to his office and I wanted those blood test results pronto.
Dr. Adam’s face brightened. “Great idea. I love their smoothies.”
Penny swiveled to me. “Are you certain you’d rather have Meemaw? I’m happy to stay and watch over you.”
Watch over me or watch me?
“Meemaw needs to be kept busy, or she gets herself into trouble.”
Penny smiled. “Idle hands, right?”
“Exactly.”
“I’ll check in with you in an hour,” Dr. Adam said.
“Don’t sleep on that other thing we talked about,” I said.
Penny’s ears perked up. “What other thing?”
“Doctor-patient confidentiality,” I said.
The second they shut the door behind them, I looked at Jinx. “Did she lock you outside so she could snoop?”
Jinx meowed.
