"They're already in your email."

"I'll still take the paper copies."

"I figured you would."

Paper can't be hacked. It can disappear. But at least it leaves evidence behind. I stand.

"So what's your plan?"

I slip the files into my messenger bag.

"I'm going to start where the records stop."

"Carys."

"Yes."

"You think she'll talk?"

"Even if she does, this won’t be easy."

"You think she'll be happy to see you?"

A short laugh escapes me.

"Definitely not."

"That bad?"

"Worse."

She winces.

"Good luck."

"I'll need more than luck."

As I reach the door, Molly speaks again.

"Rhett."

I pause.

"Be careful."

"I always am."

"No."

Her voice is quieter now.

"I don't mean careful around whoever is causing this."

She glances toward the stack of missing-person files.

"I mean careful around the past."

For a second, I can't answer. Because she's right. The investigation brought me here. But it isn't the only reason I'm about to drive across town.
