"Usually the voluntary part is implied."
Sayer looks up.
"She doesn't trust people who make breakfast."
"I do."
"No, you don't."
I point at him.
"You've known me less than a week."
"And somehow I already know."
I hate that he is right. I sit. Rhett places a plate in front of me. I look at it. Then at him.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"Carys."
"I'm just adjusting."
"To eggs?"
"To this."
I gesture around. The kitchen. The house. Them. Rhett's expression softens.
"We'll figure it out."
The word we catches me. Not you. Not me. We.
I look down at my plate.
"I should update the adoption records."
The room changes slightly. Not negatively. Just realistically. The practical things. The things nobody thinks about when monsters are involved. Sayer's expression becomes uncertain.
I reach across the table.
"Hey."
"We're going to fix everything."
"Can we?"
"Yes."
The confidence surprises even me. Because for years, I built my life around uncertainty. Now I am choosing certainty.
"We'll get your records corrected."
I glance at Rhett.
"Your father needs to be added."
