She’s goading him. I don’t know her plan or even if she has one, and my thoughts are interrupted by the sound of a car horn, the flash of lights.
My ex jerks, his head swiveling, eyes wide. He doesn’t say anything else, doesn’t even look in our direction, before taking off across the parking lot.
He’s running. Fast.
And it isn’t until a car pulls up in front of my car that I see why. Winter Lake Police Department is painted on the door.
GRANGER
Shaking my head, I stare across the table at Asha. “Repeat that.”
“Brooke had another incident with her ex.”
“When?” I kept an eye out the whole time Felix was in the hospital. Every day I checked on her, I knew she’d been spending time with my nephew and his wife, was glad she had the two of them as a makeshift barrier, and I knew she’d taken precautions.
“Two nights ago.”
“And you’re only telling me now!”
“I haven’t seen you until now.” Frustration laces Asha’s words. “And to be honest, I shouldn’t be giving you this information.”
“Right.” I pull in a breath, will myself to calm down. This isn’t on Asha. “Thanks.”
“You want to tell me what’s going on?”
“Nothing other than I saw him pinning her to a car. He’s dangerous.”
“Yeah, well.” Asha laughs. “He underestimated her friend.”
“What friend?”
“Michelle Hogan. They work together. Michelle is trained in several martial arts as well as self defense. According to their statements and the video we managed to get before he could have it erased, she put him on his knees.”
A smile curls my lips. I wish I’d been there to see him go down. “Any chance I can see that video?”
“No. It’s evidence.”
“Can Brooke get an order of protection now?”
“Unfortunately, no. He’s claiming he was just trying to help them change a flat tire and he wasn’t actually going to grab or hit either woman. They took his movement the wrong way.”
“Bullshit.”
“Probably. But we work with the evidence, and from the angle of the security footage you can’t tell what his exact intentions were.”
“Dammit.” I rub the ache in my jaw. “So what now?”
“Well, for one, the head of security can no longer erase video. If Redford does anything anywhere in or around the hospital, we’ll have it on film.”
“He’s not going to though.”
“No. At least not where any of the hospital cameras can catch him.”
“Now what?”
“Same as before. She takes precautions, and when I spoke to Michelle I got the feeling Brooke won’t be taking those on her own any more.”
“She’ll have more witnesses to corroborate her accusations.”
