“He went over the seawall,” Keating replies. “Our team saw him enter the water. A response boat is searching the shoreline.”

“Did he take anything?” I ask.

“No. Ward stopped him before he reached the evidence transport vehicle.”

Ward looks at Storm. “I told you I could take care of myself.”

She tightens her arms around him.

He closes his eyes.

A medic rushes in and begins examining his arm.

Keating crouches beside the captured intruder.

The man’s nose is bleeding. He glares at me with cold, furious eyes.

“Who sent you?” Keating asks.

The man says nothing.

Keating removes the black cap.

Thomas enters the evidence room with Mom.

The moment Thomas sees the prisoner, he stops.

His cane strikes the floor.

Nathan turns toward him. “Do you know him?”

Thomas’s face loses all color.

The prisoner smiles.

It isn’t a pleasant smile.

“You got old, Thomas.”

Keating rises. “Who is he?”

Thomas stares at the man as though a ghost has crawled from Blackwater.

“His name is Donald Cross.”

The prisoner’s smile widens.

“He worked for Pacific Maritime Restoration,” Thomas continues. “James believed he died in a salvage accident twenty years ago.”

“I didn’t die,” Cross says.

His gaze moves to the open evidence case.

“The wrong Sinclair did.”

Mom makes a broken sound.

“What does that mean?” I demand.
