Hidden Tide

by Susie McIver

The intruder grabs the evidence bag containing Grandpa’s cards and runs for the waterfront door.

I see something Ben can’t.

The floor is wet.

A black electrical cable lies across it, connected to one of the evidence lamps.

I reach out and yank the cable.

The lamp crashes from the table.

The cord wraps around the intruder’s ankle.

His foot slides in the water.

He falls hard, and the gun flies from his hand.

I’m moving before Ben can stop me.

The man reaches for the canvas bag.

I kick it away.

He catches my leg and jerks me off my feet.

My shoulder slams into the floor.

Pain shoots down my arm.

The intruder climbs over me, one hand closing around my throat.

I drive the heel of my palm into his nose.

He curses and loosens his grip.

I bring my knee up hard.

His breath explodes from his lungs.

I shove him away and scramble toward the fallen gun.

He grabs the back of my shirt.

Before he can pull me down again, Ben hits him from the side.

They crash into the table.

The intruder swings.

Ben blocks the punch and drives his fist into the man’s ribs.

The man reaches for a knife strapped to his belt.

“Knife!” I shout.

Ben catches his wrist.

They struggle for control of the blade.
