A moment later, one of Keating’s officers shouts from the rear entrance.
“Commander!”
We turn.
The officer holds up a small black device no larger than a coin.
“It was attached beneath the evidence transport vehicle.”
Keating’s face hardens. “A tracker?”
The officer nods.
The meaning hits me immediately.
Someone knows where we are.
Someone watched the evidence leave Sea Whisper.
And unless the officer had found that tracker, we would have led them straight to my sisters.

“Afamiliar harbor can become dangerous the moment an enemy learns how you enter it.”
—James Sinclair
“Everyone back inside!” Keating shouts.
Ben wraps one arm around me and rushes me through the rear entrance of the Coast Guard station at Fort Baker.
Across the water, San Francisco glows beneath the darkening sky. The towers of the Golden Gate Bridge disappear into a bank of fog rolling through the entrance to the bay.
Home is right there.
Close enough to see.
Too dangerous to return to.
Officers surround Mom, Nathan and Thomas as they hurry inside. Ward keeps Storm beside him while another team searches beneath the remaining vehicles.
Keating follows us through the door.
“Lock down the building. No one leaves until every vehicle has been cleared.”
The heavy door closes behind him.
“What about the boat?” I ask.
“Station Golden Gate has a response boat moving toward the channel. Harbor patrol is approaching from the San Francisco side.”
“Will they catch it?”
“If it’s still inside the bay.”
Ben looks through the narrow window in the door. “It was already near the bridge.”
