Simon follows with his gun pressed against the back of her head.

“Calle!” Naomi shouts. “Don’t give it to him!”

Donald grabs her throat.

I force myself not to move.

“Release her,” I say.

Simon’s laugh carries through the radio.

“Do you believe you control this?”

“I control the only thing you want.”

“You don’t even know what you’re holding.”

“It belonged to James Sinclair.”

“It belonged to your father after James gave it to him.”

I glance down at the compass.

“What did Dad hide inside it?”

“Bring it to me and perhaps I’ll tell you.”

“Release Naomi first.”

“No.”

“Then show me Captain Marquez.”

Simon becomes still.

“Careful.”

“You didn’t think we knew about him,” I say.

Donald turns sharply toward Simon.

Even from this distance, I can see the fury on his face.

“You talk too much,” Donald snaps.

“I didn’t tell them,” Simon replies.

“Then Robert did.”

A gunshot cracks through the night.

It comes from inside the ship.

Naomi ducks.

Donald turns toward the bridge door.
