A police radio crackles.
“Suspect exiting the drainage tunnel. Black uniform, moving east.”
The exterior camera catches him.
Simon emerges from the culvert and runs toward a row of buildings.
Two officers pursue him.
He reaches a motorcycle hidden behind a dumpster.
The engine starts.
A black helmet conceals his face.
“He prepared that route before entering the apartment,” Ward says.
Simon accelerates toward the street.
A police vehicle moves to block him.
He rides onto the sidewalk, passes between two concrete posts and disappears beneath an elevated roadway.
Traffic cameras follow him through one intersection.
Then two.
At the third, he enters a tunnel.
Three motorcycles emerge from the opposite side.
All black.
All ridden by men wearing identical jackets and helmets.
“Decoys,” Keating says.
The motorcycles split in three directions.
Marquez sends units after each one, but I already know Simon planned farther ahead than they did.
Ben’s image appears on another monitor as he leaves Blue Lantern.
“Don’t chase all three.”
Marquez turns toward him.
“We don’t know which one is Simon.”
“That’s the point. He wants you to divide your people.”
“What do you suggest?”
“Track the ambulance.”
“The false paramedics abandoned it.”
“Simon needed them to reach Hazel’s building without drawing attention. They came from somewhere.”
