“You also refused to go back to Lands End.”
I stare at her.
“What?”
“You screamed when Grandpa suggested taking all of us there to leave flowers.”
I don’t remember that.
Storm studies me. “You never told us.”
“I thought she was frightened of the cliffs,” Mom says. “Your father’s car went through a guardrail near the ocean. It seemed understandable.”
“But it wasn’t the road that scared me.”
“I don’t know.”
A knock sounds at the secured entrance.
One of the Coast Guard officers opens the door and speaks quietly with someone in the hall.
Commander Keating enters carrying a tablet.
“Agent Marquez, they’re ready for you.”
“Who?”
“Marcus Bell.”
Marquez takes the tablet.
I move toward her. “I want to hear what he says.”
“No.”
“He came to my family’s house carrying a photograph with my name on it.”
“And he may use the interview to frighten or manipulate you.”
“Then let me watch from another room.”
Marquez hesitates.
Ben steps closer to me. “She deserves to know why she’s being hunted.”
I look at him, surprised.
An hour ago, he would have agreed with Marquez and tried to keep me as far away from the prisoner as possible.
He meets my gaze.
“I said I’m learning.”
“You are.”
Marquez looks between us. “You may watch the interview on the secure feed, but you will remain here. If I believe Bell is communicating directly with you or attempting to provoke a reaction, the feed ends.”
“I agree.”
