Caspian: The Not So Friendly Ghost

Toward the back of the first floor, tucked behind a set of pocket doors near the solarium, was a large guest suite. When I pushed the doors open, Granny's face lit up.

The room had a king-sized bed with crisp white linens, a comfortable sitting area with a leather recliner positioned beside tall windows overlooking the garden, and a bathroom with double vanities, a walk-in shower with marble seating, and a deep soaking tub.

“Oh, Lakelyn,” Granny whispered, walking slowly over to the recliner and running her hand over the leather. “This room is bigger than my entire living room back home.”

“Good,” I said, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and kissing her temple. “You deserve the space. The air filtration in this wing is hospital-grade, Granny… no dust, no soot, and no stairs. You can sit right here and read your devotionals while looking out at the hydrangeas.”

Willow poked her head into the bathroom and let out another gasp. “Granny, you have a whole spa in here! Look at this shower, you could fit a choir in this thing!”

Granny laughed, the sound warm and clear. “I don't need a choir in my shower, Willow Ann. I just need hot water and a place to rest my knees.”

She turned and took my hands in hers, her brown eyes searching my face. “You did good, baby. You doing all right with all of this?”

“I’m doing good, Granny,” I promised, squeezing her fingers. “Seeing you comfortable makes it worth it.”

“All right then. Go get Kaidence and your sister situated. Don’t you worry about me.”

By the time Willow and I carried the rest of the bags upstairs, Kaidence was practically vibrating with excitement.

“How many rooms are in this house?” he asked, taking the stairs two at a time until I caught him by the back of his jacket.

“A lot, baby. Now walk properly.”

“Why did Daddy have so many?”

“Because he liked having plenty of space.”

“Why?”

“Because he could afford it.”

“Why?”

I stopped on the landing and stared down at him.

Willow burst out laughing behind me.

“Do not ‘why’ me to death today, Kaidence,” I warned gently.

He flashed that wide, dimpled grin. “Okay. But let me show you my room! Me and Grandma picked it out yesterday.”

Before either of us could answer, he took off down the hallway like he had been waiting all day for the grand reveal.

By the time Willow and I caught up, Kaidence was standing in the middle of the room with both arms stretched wide like he was unveiling a new mansion instead of a bedroom.

“Ladies,” he announced proudly, “I present to you Kaidence’s Kingdom.”

Willow and I both burst out laughing.

“Boy, if you don’t stop,” I said, stepping inside.

The room was already more than comfortable. Henrietta had clearly made sure of that. There was a nice bedroom set, plenty of drawer space, a large bed, a TV, and enough toys spread across the room to keep him occupied for weeks. Monster trucks, action figures, games, and unopened boxes were already stacked neatly near one wall.

Kaidence spun around, taking it all in like he owned the entire wing.

It still wasn’t enough for him.

“Mommy?”
