Lakelyn knew me too well not to notice when something had shifted my mood, but luckily, she had no idea what was sitting on my screen.

“I guess you can say that,” I replied.

She tipped her head slightly, studying me with more interest now. “Care to share?”

“It’s just somebody I gotta meet later. He’s handling something for me.”

Her smile changed immediately, curiosity sharpening into playful suspicion. “That sounds suspicious.”

I chuckled as I locked the screen before she got nosy enough to snatch the phone from me.

“It ain’t whatever going through that curious brain of yours.”

“Mm-hmm.”

That little hum told me she didn’t believe a damn word I said, but I wasn’t giving her anything else.

Lakelyn could pull information out of me without even trying sometimes, and I wasn’t about to ruin a surprise I had spent months putting together.

Another text came through.

I assumed it was Muiz again, probably confirming what time he wanted me to meet him, so I opened it without much thought.

It wasn’t.

One of my people had fucked up.

My good mood faded as I read through the message.

Nothing had completely fallen apart, but somebody had moved a shipment before I gave the order, the numbers weren’t matching what they were supposed to, and apparently one of the men under me had decided he was important enough to make decisions without checking with me first.

He wasn’t.

I read it again, this time slower, already sorting through who I needed to call and how much of my afternoon this bullshit was about to cost me.

That was going to have to be handled.

“Okay, now that was somebody different.”

Lakelyn’s voice pulled me back into the room.

I locked the phone and slid it into my pocket before she could get any nosier. “How you know?”

“Because the first message had you grinning.” She pointed toward my face. “That one right there? That’s your business face.”

I almost smiled. “My business face? I ain’t got no damn business face.”

“Yes, you do.”

She started counting on her fingers, amusement creeping into her voice. “You have your regular face, your irritated face, your ‘somebody is about to get hurt’ face, and your business face.”

I laughed. “What the hell is the difference between my irritated face and somebody-about-to-get-hurt face?”

“The eyes. When you’re irritated, you still blink like a normal person. When somebody is about to get hurt, you get real calm and start doing that little jaw thing.”

I rubbed a hand over my jaw without thinking.

Lakelyn immediately pointed. “That! Exactly that!”
