He turned toward me.

I moved closer. “Tell me…” My voice cracked. “Tell me that isn’t true.”

He immediately shook his head. “Lakelyn, somebody playing games.”

“How?!” I bellowed in anger. “It’s you talking! You killed Caspian!”

“Nah, love. Don’t put that on me. Somebody setting me up.”

The denial only made something inside me ache harder.

Willow stepped between us. “Bullshit!”

Chalis shifted toward her. “Willow, stay the fuck out of this.”

“No, you stay the fuck away from my sister, nigga!” She pointed toward the ceiling. “That was your mothafuckin voice!”

“Anybody can make some shit sound like somebody!”

Willow gave a bitter laugh. “Oh, so now somebody running around making fake recordings of you killing Caspian?”

“Man, fuck this shit.”

Chalis rushed back to the door and yanked at the handle again. “Open this fuckin’ door!”

His friends started shouting too. One demanded that somebody call the police while another tried forcing open a window.

“Why?” I asked, my voice was barely audible.

Chalis turned. “What?”

“Why would you do that?”

He turned away.

“Chalis, face me!”

He didn’t.

I moved toward him. “Why the fuck would you do that to him?!”

Willow caught my arm before I could get any closer. “Sis.”

I tried pulling away. “No! I want him to answer me! Be a man for once in your life!”

Then the lights went out again.

A slow piano melody began playing through the mansion.

I recognized it immediately.

The Halloween theme… Michael Myers’s music.

Of all the mothafuckin’ songs.

Willow screamed, but almost immediately I realized something else was wrong.

The people around us weren’t reacting normally anymore.
