by Alecia J.

“Apparently.”

Willow handed her drink to the closest person without even checking who it was. “Oh, I got this.”

I caught her before she could march off.

“No, I got this.”

She grinned proudly before reluctantly nodding. “Have it, boo.”

I drew in a steadying breath and headed straight toward Chalis.

He was standing near one of the tables laughing at something his friend had said when I tapped him on the shoulder. He turned, and the smile already on his face widened the moment he realized it was me.

“Damn.”

I folded my arms. “What the fuck are you doing in my house, Chalis?”

His attention traveled slowly over my costume, lingering long enough to make my skin crawl before he licked his lips.

“Shit, Lakelyn. Damn, girl, you look good.”

“Nigga, did you hear what the fuck I asked you?”

He laughed. “Yeah, I heard you.”

“Then answer me!” I demanded.

He gestured around us. “I’m at the party.”

“No shit.”

“Then why you asking?”

I moved closer so he understood I wasn’t in the mood to play with him. “Because this is an invitation-only party, and I know damn well my sister didn’t invite you.”

A smug smile tugged at his mouth. “You sure about that?”

“Positive.”

“Well, you might wanna check again.”

My irritation sharpened. “What?”

He shrugged. “I definitely received an invitation.”

“From who?”

“Your sister.”

That didn’t make any sense.

The staff at the entrance had been checking every guest against the list all night, and Willow and I had gone over that damn list three separate times the day before. There was no way Chalis’s name had somehow slipped past both of us.

“Stay right there.”

He smiled. “Yes, ma’am.”

I rolled my eyes and walked toward the entrance, where one of the greeters stood holding a clipboard.
