“I know.”
“Then why do you keep bringing it up?”
“Because there are still two more days until the party, which means there’s a little hope for you yet. Plus, I know you’d have fun.”
I shook my head. “Willow, even if I wanted to come, which I don’t, I don’t have anything to wear.”
She stared at me for a second before slowly looking me up and down. “Lakelyn.”
“What?”
“You’re sitting on ninety million dollars.”
“And?”
“And you acting like you gotta go in your closet and sew a costume out of an old bedsheet! Girl, you could have somebody fly in from fucking Paris and hand-deliver you a costume by tomorrow morning!”
I laughed. “That’s not the point.”
“Then what is the point?” she countered.
I sighed. “I don’t know. I just don’t feel like it.”
She studied me for a moment before nodding. “Okay.”
I looked at her suspiciously. “Okay?”
“Yeah.”
“That’s it?”
She shrugged. “I ain’t gonna force you.”
I smiled faintly. “Thank you.”
Willow picked her clipboard up again. “But if you change your mind, I’m going as a sexy vampire, and I already found a place that got this sexy nurse costume you would look fine as hell in. Hell, you might as well let that nursing degree work a little overtime for something besides saving lives.”
I chuckled. “Well, I’m going upstairs. Let me check on Kaidence.”
“Okay.”
I started toward the staircase, then stopped and turned back. “And Willow?”
She looked up. “What?”
“Please don’t buy anything else.”
She smiled. “No promises.”
I shook my head and headed upstairs.
I was almost to Kaidence’s bedroom when I heard him talking. At first, I assumed he was playing with his toys or watching something on his tablet, but then I heard him say something that stopped me outside the door.
“So we’re gonna be a family soon?”
My heart skipped.
I stood completely still and listened.
