See… even your criminal coworker got sense.

Yonas ignored the obvious wisdom being offered to him. “She still cares about me. And she cares about what happens to me.”

“Nigga, she can care about you and still not want yo’ ass back.”

I nodded.

Talk to him.

Yonas’s voice hardened. “I know her better than you do.”

“Then you should know whether she meant it when she ended things.”

I covered my mouth to keep from laughing out of pure habit, even though nobody could hear me anyway.

Damn.

The man wasn’t finished.

“I’m serious. Don’t go down there making shit worse because your pride can’t handle that she moved on.”

Yonas paced toward the foot of the bed. “She hasn’t moved on that fast. We’ve only been broken up for a month. I love her,” he admitted.

My head snapped toward him.

Oh, this nigga done lost his fucking mind.

“I never said you didn’t,” the other guy replied.

“Then quit making it sound like everything I did with the company got something to do with how I feel about her. That shit was business. Lakelyn and Kaidence were personal. I really did love being with them. I still do.”

I stared at him.

I could believe that part. He seemed to genuinely care about Lakelyn and Kaidence. Unfortunately for him, that didn’t make me like the rest of what I was hearing any fucking better.

The man on the phone sighed. “Yonas, I’m gonna say this one time. Lakelyn seems like the kind of woman who stands on what she says. If she told you it was over, you better be prepared for that answer to still be over no matter how long you sit in her face.”

Yonas was quiet for a moment before replying, “I’m not leaving without at least trying.”

I pushed away from the dresser.

Aight.

Yonas wanted Lakelyn back, and I wanted his ass gone.

Only one of us was getting what we wanted.

And unlike Yonas, I had home-field advantage.

The man on the phone said something else about calling him if anything changed with the investigation, but I barely cared anymore.

My attention stayed locked on Yonas as he ended the call and stood there for a moment, staring at his phone.

The nigga had lied to Lakelyn about why his job was in jeopardy, dragged corporate fraud into my house, and apparently arrived with a private plan to reclaim my woman while sleeping under my roof.

Bold… stupid as fuck, but bold, nonetheless.

Yonas slipped his phone into his pocket and headed downstairs. I followed right behind him because at that point, I might as well see what else this mothafucka planned on doing in my house.
