"What is happening?"
Philip's face was pale. "I don't know."
One of the senior partners came through the doorway behind him, fury written across her face. It took me a moment, and then I remembered her name. Felicity Barnes. She barely glanced at me before turning on Philip.
"How could you do this?" Philip stared at her in shock.
"I didn't do anything."
"Fraud. Embezzlement. Tax evasion. We've got investigators going through years of records. They spent their holidays trying to untangle the web of lies you created to hide what you've done."
"What?" I couldn't make sense of the words.
Fraud.
Embezzlement.
Tax evasion.
Not Philip.
Never Philip.
I looked at him again.
He looked terrified.
"I swear to you, Darren, I don't know what's happening."
Evan started crying.
He didn't understand the words, but he understood that Daddy was wearing handcuffs and that everyone around him was angry. "Daddy!"
Philip's expression broke. "Evan."
Our son reached for him, sobbing.
Matt began crying, too, frightened by his brother's distress. Laura immediately joined in, her cries rising over theirs.
Three children crying.
Philip in handcuffs.
Police officers everywhere.
And I couldn't make any of it make sense.
"I need to go with him," I said.
"Sir, there's nothing you can do right now."
"He's my husband."
"I understand."
"I need to know where they're taking him."
The officer gave me the information, but I barely heard it.
