“I am so sorry. I had no clue.”
“No worries.” He smiles at me and nods toward the bar. “Would you like a drink?”
“Yeah, actually, I think I may go and get a drink. I’ll be right back.” I jump off of the chair and head over to the bar quickly. I need a drink before I pack up and go home.
Jimmy the Fish gives me a grin as he looks up from the beer he’s pouring. “How’s it going, Rosie?”
“Pretty good. Thanks for asking.” I look over to the side as I see Sage hurrying over to me.
“What are you doing, Rosie? You’re meant to be sitting down, flirting with all the hotties.”
She’s loud, and I notice that Brett is eavesdropping on the conversation. Of course he is.
“You know what, Sage? Do not make me go off on you right now.”
“What? It’s not amazing?”
“No, it’s not amazing. It’s absolutely awful right now.”
“What? That first guy looked kind of cute.”
“The first guy was a horrible man. I am not interested in him whatsoever.”
“Don’t forget that I could always ask Dalton if he knows any men he—”
“No, you’re not asking Dalton anything.” I look over at Jimmy, who is obviously listening to our entire conversation. “Hey, Jimmy. Can I get a lemon drop, please? Strong.”
“Coming right up.” He nods and grabs a glass.
“I need to get something in the kitchen. I’ll be right back.” Sage rushes to the back.
“Okay.” I nod and wait by the bar for my drink.
I feel a little bit rude. John is sitting there by himself, looking over at me, and I offer him a small wave before turning away from him.
“Hey there, Rosie. How’s your evening going?” The smooth, warm tone of Brett’s voice sounds from next to me, and I look up at him, trying to remain cool, calm, and collected. His light-brown eyes are intense as he stares at me, yet he doesn’t actually smile. He still looks hot though. It’s unfair that he can be so brooding and so sexy without trying. He reminds me of a modern-day Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights.
“Hey, Brett. How are you?” I make sure to keep my tone nonchalant. He doesn’t need to know my heart is racing.
“I’m good. I didn’t know you were going to be dating tonight.”
“Why would you have known?” I say, shrugging. “It’s not like we chat on the phone every day and I tell you all my secrets.”
“So, are you enjoying it?”
“I’m having the most amazing time. All the men are fabulous. I wouldn’t be surprised if I was planning a double wedding for me and Sage soon.”
I wink at him, and he raises an eyebrow.
“Oh?” He frowns slightly. “Really?”
“No, not really. It’s absolutely awful. These men suck.”
“But didn’t the event just start?”
“Yeah, but my first two dates haven’t gone well.”
“I see.” He nods slowly. “That’s a shame.”
