The Boyfriend Bet

“If I knew then what I know now, I would slap myself across the face …”

“Brett!” I smack his shoulder, and he bursts out laughing. “What is that?”

“It’s a song I made up for you, my love,” he says as he drives me back to my apartment.

“I can’t believe we’re going to tell everyone we’re officially boyfriend and girlfriend.”

He glances at me as he pulls into the parking lot. “Everyone’s going to think we’ve lost it.”

“I think Sage, Izzy, and Lucia are going to be happy for me. I think Dalton and Roman are going to think you’ve lost your ever-loving mind because you were so not interested in relationships.”

“Well, obviously, that was before I met you, my darling.”

“Obviously,” I say. “It is kind of crazy though.” I look at him. “You know what? There’s something we still need to figure out.”

“What’s that?” he asks, looking confused.

“The bet.”

“The bet?” He raises an eyebrow. “Oh, you mean, the boyfriend bet?”

“Yeah. You were supposed to find me a boyfriend, and I was supposed to find you a friend with benefits or whatever.”

“Then I guess we have to say you won.”

“Oh, yeah?”

“Yeah. Because not only did you do better than me, but you got me a girlfriend. You opened my heart. You made me see that the way I was living wasn’t the way to true happiness.”

“Oh, and now you know the way to true happiness?”

“You’re the way to true happiness.”

“But you kind of won, too, because you did get me a boyfriend. You’re just the boyfriend.” A thought suddenly strikes me. “You called it from the beginning, you know?”

“I did?”

“Yeah, I have a feeling that you knew, either way, we’d end up together.”

“True. So, that makes me a winner in more ways than one. I’m glad you came to me with that bet, even though I thought it was the most ridiculous, craziest idea I’d ever heard in my life.”

“So, what does that mean for the prize?” I ask.

“Well, it means we’re definitely going to the Grand Tetons. I suppose it means one night of camping and then three in a hotel.”

“You know what, my love? I can compromise. We can camp for two nights and then do the hotel for four.”

“You just want to stay longer.”

“I do. I’ve heard about the elk and the buffalo and the deer and the bears, and I want to experience it all. It’ll be our first official vacation together.”

“Oh, so you want to get me out into the wild so you can have your wicked way with me?”

“I wouldn’t say that. But I’ve never had sex in a tent or in a sleeping bag.”

“So, are you telling me that’s what you want?” He winks at me.

“I mean, I’ll have you any way I can get you, Brett Selleck.”
