Crew shrugs before glancing away from her and back to the field. “It’s what we do. We show up for our boys.”
A flash of disappointment crosses Nora’s face, but she doesn’t let it linger. I just wonder if she’s ever going to get the nerve to tell the guy how she feels about him.
“You promised me, huh?” I ask Easton when I look back at him.
His brows draw together. “Uh, yeah. Don’t you remember, babe?”
“Ugh. Promises and terms of endearment? Get a room, you two,” Blair quips from behind us, but my eyes are locked on Easton.
Did he really just say that out loud? In front of my parents? In front of our friends?
I guess he really is taking this role seriously.
“You’re so sickeningly in love that it’s painfully reminding me that I’m not,” Blair adds.
“Did you want me to set you up with someone?” Mom asks Blair over her shoulder.
Blair rolls her eyes. “No, Mom. I’m good. I’m not that desperate yet.”
Mom scoffs. “That’s the only reason you would trust your mother to set you up, out of desperation?” She arches a brow at my sister. “Do you not think I could pick a decent guy for you?”
Blair sighs, placing her hand on Mom’s shoulder. “That’s not it at all. I just…don’t know if I’m going to find that man in Garnet Valley, Mom.”
Mom shakes her head and focuses back on the field. “Not with an attitude like that, you’re not.”
A whistle rings out from the field as the play clock turns to zero, signaling the end of the first half of the game. My brother looks pissed, and rightfully so since they’ve had four chances to score but managed only one touchdown.
“You still hungry?” Easton asks, pulling my attention back to him.
I peer down at the empty box that held enough food for two people. “Uh, no. I think I’m good.”
“Looks like you got your appetite back.”
Shrugging, I stand to toss my trash. “Yeah, I guess so.”
Easton practically leaps from his seat and takes the empty box from me. “Hey, I’ve got it.”
“I can throw away my own trash, Easton.”
“I know you can, but I’m going to do it for you.”
I plant my hands on my hips as I glare back at him. “And why is that?”
“Because you’re on your feet all day during labs and work experience. You have the chance to sit, so you need to. Don’t argue with me about this.”
My mother clears her throat behind me. “He’s right, Lennon.”
I twist around to face her. “Is this you two ganging up on me again?”
“If it means you’ll actually rest, then yes,” Easton says as I turn back to him.
I want to pick a fight with him, but I know this isn’t the time. And a traitorous part of me likes the bossiness.
Slowly, I lower myself back onto my cushion. Easton smirks in satisfaction before leaning down until his lips brush my ear. “Good girl.”
My entire body shivers from those two words as I watch him retreat down the steps.
Damn these hormones. They’re making his bossiness feel more like foreplay by the day.
