Who the Heart Chooses

But the only time I allowed myself to lean into that attraction, it ended horribly. Before that, it would have been the biggest mistake to let myself think of him as anything other than my best friend.

My hormones seem to have forgotten that detail the further along I’ve gotten in my pregnancy and the more we slip into the routine of living together.

Patty was right. If I’m not careful, I’m definitely going to be spreading my legs for my fake husband.

And that’s a horrible idea.

Or is it?

If this surge of hormones doesn’t stop, would it be so bad to ask him to fulfill those husbandly duties too?

Lennon, you’re going off the deep end, honey. Reel it in.

Easton leads me to the counter to order food, yet the only thing that sounds good is a donut. I groan.

“What’s wrong?”

I place my hand on my stomach. “The only thing that sounds good right now is a donut.”

“Then get a donut.”

“It’s not healthy.”

“But it’s food. You need to eat something, Lennon.” He orders two donuts for us before I can argue further.

“And a chocolate milk, please,” I bark out before he pays.

He grins. “And two chocolate milks.”

Once he pays, he leads me over to an empty table and hands me my food. I take one bite of the chocolate glazed donut and groan. “Oh my god, that’s good.”

Easton swallows roughly before taking a bite, smiling around his mouthful of food. “I agree.”

“You didn’t have to get a donut too, you know.”

“Well, I can’t let you feel guilty about eating one alone, can I?”

“Please. Eating one donut won’t do anything to your body,” I say, waving my hand toward him.

He smirks, patting his rock-hard stomach. “No, it won’t, but that’s because I burn it all off while working.”

“Aren’t you supposed to be doing that right now?”

“The crews are on a break and I wanted to check on you.” He shrugs.

“I’m fine, Easton. Truly.”

He tilts his head. “I feel better when I see it with my own two eyes. Now, do you want anything else before I head back to the work site?”

“No, I’m good. Thank you.”

“You sure?”

“Yes, Easton,” I say with a hint of annoyance. And I’m not sure why. Every time he goes out of his way to show me how much he cares, I both love it and resent it.

He rolls his eyes. “Fine.” Dipping his head down to mine, he kisses the top of my head. “Have a good rest of your day and I’ll see you at home.”

“You too.”
