Who the Heart Chooses

But me?

The more I adjust to living with him, seeing him every day, and fighting like hell to accept his help, the more I keep wondering how I’m going to handle the fallout of our agreement.

Especially because being near him is stirring up something that I haven’t felt toward him since the night I threw myself at him.

And I wanted him to kiss me at that doctor’s office. For one split second, I thought he was going to, too.

But he didn’t.

I was disappointed.

And I have no idea what to do about it.

“And then, he makes the babies so freaking cute that you’re crazy enough to have another one,” Patty continues, pulling me from my thoughts.

The idea of having two kids nearly makes me vomit right in front of her. “I think I’m good with just the one for now.”

Patty chuckles. “You say that now. But trust me, once you see Easton as a father, you’ll be spreading your legs for him without realizing it. In fact, once you hit the second trimester, that’s all you’ll want to do.”

My thighs clench together at her suggestion. But I can’t deny that the visual of Easton holding a baby does something to my body.

Him in a backwards hat, dark stubble dusting his jaw, no shirt on, and the coarse hair on his chest and that happy trail that I can’t seem to get out of my head taunting me as a gentle dusting of his manliness over his tan skin. Jeans slung low on his hips, a dark brown leather belt fed through the loops, and those steel-toed leather boots he wears to work every day.

But him looking like that while holding my baby?

Yeah, my ovaries don’t stand a chance.

Patty points off to her right. “Speaking of your baby daddy…”

I look over in the direction she’s pointing, and sure enough, Easton is walking toward us looking almost exactly the way I just envisioned him, except he’s wearing a shirt.

What a shame.

“Easton Buckley.” Patty stands from the bench and walks over to him, pulling him in for a hug.

“Hello, Patty.”

She cups the side of his face. “It’s about time you locked this girl down.”

Easton chuckles. “She resisted me for a while, but you know I don’t give up easily.”

I roll my eyes, and he shoots me a wink . And that tiny move has my thighs pressing together.

“What are you doing on campus?” Patty asks him.

“I’m running the telephone pole restoration project.”

“Well, good for you.”

“Thanks. And it gives me a chance to check up on my wife here and there.”

My wife.

Not sure I’ll ever get used to anyone calling me that, let alone Easton.

But I can’t deny that it makes my chest grow warm, among other things.

Easton walks over and takes my hand, helping me off the bench before pulling me against his chest. His arm wraps around my waist, and he dips his mouth toward mine—only to press a kiss to the corner of my lips instead.
