Who the Heart Chooses

She shakes her head, a smile still on her lips. “No. I think it just hit me that we’re freaking married, Easton. Like…married, married. Brushing our teeth together and shit.”

“Yeah. We are definitely married married.”

“It’s just wild, is all.”

“At least we know each other, though.”

“Most married people do.”

I roll my eyes. “You know what I mean.”

“I think so, but elaborate, please.”

Crossing my arms over my chest, I lean my hip against the bathroom counter. “You could have married a stranger.”

Lennon huffs out a laugh. “Ha! Yeah, no. Trust me, the only reason I agreed to this is because it’s you.”

Fuck. Her words hit me square in the chest.

“I think that was meant to be a compliment…”

“It was.” The corner of her mouth tips up again. “And I truly am grateful.”

I drop my arms and take a step closer to her, cupping the side of her face. And if I didn’t know any better, I’d swear her breath just hitched.

Again, I’m not sure if these reactions are just from awkwardness, or if there’s something else going on here, but I’m not going to stop showing her affection because my instinct to protect her won’t let me.

And if we’re going to sell this in public, we need to talk about what she’s comfortable with.

“Well, if it makes you feel any better, I wouldn’t have offered to marry anyone but you.”

“Is that right?”

“One hundred percent true, Lennon.”

“Then I guess this was just the perfect storm of circumstances for us both, huh?”

My eyes dip down to those plump lips of hers. “I guess so.” Swallowing roughly, I say, “By the way, my mom is going to want us to come over for dinner at some point, but I’m holding her off for a bit. I know you’re swamped with school and the GVCC job starts Monday, so she won’t mind waiting to see you again after all this time anyway.”

“I really hope she doesn’t hate me.”

“Why would she?”

Shrugging, she says, “I don’t know. Just a fear.”

I stroke the side of her face with my thumb. “Trust me, my mom could never hate you, Lennon.”

In fact, she’s more excited about the fact that I married her than anyone else.

Lennon’s smirk drops and then she clears her throat and backs away from me. “I, uh…I think we should get some sleep.”

“Yeah. You’re right.”

From my side of the bed, I watch Lennon pull down the comforter and settle onto the sheet as I rip off my shirt and toss it on the floor.

“What are you doing?” she asks, peering up at me from her pillow.

“I can’t sleep with a shirt on, Lennon. Sorry. Normally, I don’t wear shorts either, but I thought that might be too much. If anything makes you uncomfortable, tell me.”
