Who the Heart Chooses

Yes. That’s what’s going on.

My reaction has nothing to do with the fact that my former best friend just opened his home to me and I can’t even remember if I’ve thanked him.

I guess that needs to be put at the top of my to-do list once we get to his house.

“Uh, last time I checked, you lived on the other side of this road, Easton.”

Easton hops down from the driver’s seat of his truck as I stand from my car that I pulled in behind him. I was following him to his house, but apparently he planned to take us on a slight detour. Even though this is a dirt road I’ve been down many times before, the last time we were here, things between us were very different.

“Thank you for the reminder.”

“Seriously. What are we doing?”

He turns toward the thick grass and holds out his hand. “Looking at fireflies.”

I glance toward the field, unable to hide my smile. “What?”

I slip my hand into his and he leads me to the back of his truck, lowers the tailgate, and lifts me onto it the same way he did when we were younger.

The memory makes my chest ache. “Easton…”

He slides onto the tailgate beside me and sighs, staring up at the sky on the brink of darkness. “We need to talk.”

“Do you want a divorce already?” I tease, but he doesn’t laugh.

His eyes finally meet mine. “No, Lennon. I just want to know where your head is before we get to my house and all of this starts feeling more real.”

An uneasy laugh slips out of me. “Not sure you want the answer to that.”

He doesn’t take the bait. He simply waits. I grow quiet before placing my hand on my stomach, debating just how honest I should be. “Well, I feel sick to my stomach, and not just from the morning sickness.”

“How come?”

“I just feel like everything has moved so fast that I can’t catch up.”

“I understand that. If it makes you feel any better, I feel that way too.”

“Well, this was your idea.”

The corner of his mouth lifts. “I know, but it doesn’t mean I don’t have reservations too.”

“Like what?”

He pushes a hand through his hair. “Like, how long do you want this to last?”

My chest grows tight. “Oh. Well—”

“I have no timeline,” he cuts me off, locking eyes with me. “I’m here for as long as you need me. No questions asked.”

“But what about your life, Easton? You can’t exactly date if you’re married to me.”

He shrugs. “I don’t really date anyway.”

It’s not that I haven’t noticed that, but now that he’s saying it out loud, it piques my curiosity.

“Why?”
