Who the Heart Chooses

I tip back my drink and drain it. “Excuse me, but I—I need a refill.”

Stomping off, I decide to make a detour on my way to the bar and say hello to the two men I noticed right before Easton came by and ruined my buzz.

I tap the shoulder of the one with lighter hair before finding my voice. “Excuse me?”

The man turns to face me. “Yeah?”

I tuck a strand of my wavy blond hair behind my ear as I bring my drink to my lips, forgetting that it’s basically empty. “Are you friends with Henley Clark?”

The two guys glance at each other before the first guy nods. “I am.”

“I thought so. I’m actually friends with his girlfriend.” I extend my hand to him. “I’m Lennon.”

Recognition flashes across his face. “Oh, yeah. Elodie’s friend from back home.”

“That’s me. Sorry if this is awkward, but I recognized you two from pictures she’s posted online and just thought I’d say hello.”

“I’m Rhonan, and this is Elliot,” the guy with the lighter hair says, pointing to his friend with jet-black hair.

“Well, we’re glad you said hello,” Elliot interjects. “Although I’m sorry to say, Elodie isn’t here with us tonight.”

I roll my eyes playfully. “Oh, I know. I tried to get her to come out, but since she shacked up with Henley, I can barely get the girl to answer her phone.”

Elliot huffs out a laugh. “Henley is the same way.”

A gust of air hits me from behind. I don’t have to turn around to guess who it is.

“Lennon.”

I take a step away from my unexpected visitor, keeping my back to him. “I’m busy, Easton.”

Rhonan stands from his seat, instantly on guard. “Is everything okay here?”

I spin around, which is a mistake because Easton locks eyes with me. “If Lennon would just talk to me, it would be.”

Glaring at him, I say, “I didn’t realize we had things to talk about.”

“Well, that would be a first.”

The two men watch us before I let out a sigh and turn back to them. “Tell Elodie I said hello, will you?”

Elliot nods. “Of course.”

“And maybe I’ll see you guys soon. I think a trip to Blossom Peak could help me clear my head.” I glance back at Easton before sliding away from them and toward the other side of the bar.

“Fucking pain in my ass,” Easton grumbles behind me, but I can feel him follow me as I move.

Ignoring him, I wave down the bartender and gesture for another drink.

Easton slides up next to me. “Lennon, don’t be like this.”

“Like what?”

“Childish.”

I snap my eyes to his. “I’m not being childish.”

“Yes, you are. I just wanted to say hello.”
