Who the Heart Chooses

Picking up my pace, I keep my eyes locked on hers as our bodies rock together, grinding and slapping until we’re both seeing fucking stars.

Lennon falls over the edge first, and I wait until she’s ridden every last tremor before letting myself come undone.

“Fuuuuccckkk, Lennon.” My head is buried in her neck as I come, and then I collapse back on the bed, taking Lennon with me so she covers my chest.

When I’ve finally gathered myself, Lennon has twisted so we’re facing each other now. She reaches up and runs her fingernails through the scruff on my jaw. “I wish you would have given me the chance to choose you all those years ago, Easton.”

There’s so much emotion in her eyes that my chest nearly splits in two. I bring her hand to my mouth, pressing my lips to her fingers. “I don’t.”

“Really?”

“Yes, because this is where we are now. Like you said, you’d go through all the shit again to get here, and I feel the same. I think this is how it was supposed to happen, Lennon.”

“Yeah, but I hate that it took me so long to realize what was right in front of me this entire time.”

“Well, someone likes to argue too much, so…” She pinches one of my nipples, making me squeal. “Hey!”

“Yeah, well, someone could have been honest about prom night.”

I push a stray hair from her face. “But you’re my wife now. Mrs. Lennon Buckley. The mother of my child and, I hope, the children yet to come. I think that’s a pretty decent trade-off.”

Her eyes bounce between mine. “You want more kids?”

“Absolutely. I’ll have as many as you’re willing to carry.”

Lennon laughs. “Let’s see how evacuating this one is first before we talk about another, okay?”

“Sounds good.” I kiss her hand again before making love to her one more time before we both pass out.

“It’s getting late, Easton. I have school tomorrow, and you have work.”

I lift Lennon’s hand to my lips and kiss it as my truck cruises along the dirt road to our field. “I know, but this won’t take long.”

She eyes me curiously as I stop, the grass swaying around us beneath a moonless sky. The stars are still visible, so I take that as a win. “You know it’s way past firefly season, right?”

I nod before exiting the truck, moving around to Lennon’s side to help her down. It’s late Sunday evening and we’re only minutes away from our house after driving back from Nashville today. But before we go home, there’s one last thing I want to discuss with my best friend turned wife.

With her hand in mine, I lead her to the back of the truck, popping the tailgate down and sliding her cushion over to the edge, helping her sit on top of it.

“You brought my cushion?”

“Of course, baby.” I hop onto the tailgate beside her and cover her hand with mine.

A cool breeze drifts through the field, but Lennon is bundled in a warm coat. Like I told her, this won’t take long.

“You know, there might not be any real fireflies out tonight, but there’s still one with us,” I say, turning to catch Lennon’s reaction.

“Where?”

My hand lands on her stomach. “Here.”

Lennon smiles. “Yeah. I thought it was pretty cute that you called her our firefly at the last doctor’s appointment. It’s definitely unique.”

“It is, but that’s not the only reason I decided to call her that.”

“Wh—what do you mean?”
