Who the Heart Chooses

Lennon laughs. “She’d love that. The girl always has been obsessed with popcorn.”

“I remember.”

Lennon takes her seat, and I sit beside her, keeping her hand in mine. I love that I can touch her freely without wondering whether she welcomes it. After this past week and all our conversations, I think we’re finally on the same page.

Now I just need to lay my heart on the line completely.

I want to tell her that I love her.

I want to ask her to stay married to me.

And I want to promise to marry her again in front of our friends and family, so they can witness the love story we’ve spent nearly a lifetime creating.

I just need to find the right time to do that, but I know it’s going to happen this weekend.

The lights flash, signaling that the show is about to start. Lennon bounces in her seat. “I’m so excited. I forgot how much I love concerts.”

“Like you forgot how much you love hockey?”

“Guess I just needed you to remind me of that fact.”

I lean forward and press my mouth to hers softly. “I can handle that responsibility.”

“Lord knows you love to take those on.”

When the first chord rings out, the crowd goes wild. Everyone rises, including Lennon and me.

“If your feet get tired, don’t be afraid to sit down,” I say in her ear as Tyler Ford finishes his first song.

“I should be good. I rested a lot this week and these cowboy boots are actually very comfortable.”

“Still. Don’t forget that it’s an option.”

She presses up on her toes, planting a kiss on my lips. “I know. Thank you for always looking out for me. I—I think I could get used to this.”

My eyes bore into hers. “Baby, I already am.”

“On my last album, I had the honor of writing with one of the best in the business, Miss Elodie Olsen!” Tyler Ford announces. “When I asked her to sing some of our songs with me tonight, I was honored she said yes. So, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Elodie to the stage!”

Lennon’s screams nearly drown out all of the other noise. “Hell yeah! That’s my best friend!”

I laugh and clap for Elodie. I know how hard she worked for this career, and it’s fucking awesome to see her succeed. She kept her maiden name professionally, but Lennon and I know Henley is somewhere in this arena muttering that her last name is Clark now.

Elodie catches our eyes and waves before walking to Tyler and wrapping him in a hug. “Thanks for having me, Tyler!”

“The pleasure is all mine, Elodie. Now, what do you say we give the audience an experience they won’t soon forget?”

“I think that’s exactly why we’re here tonight!”

Elodie and Tyler launch into an upbeat song, follow it with a few slower tracks I recognize from the radio, and finish with a banger that makes the arena shake.

By the time Elodie leaves the stage, Lennon is sweating, but smiling from ear to ear. She turns to look up at me. “Oh my god, she was amazing!”

“She was.”

I push the hair from Lennon’s face and watch her swallow hard. “I didn’t want to miss a moment, but I’m dying of thirst. Can we get a drink?”

“Yeah. Let me grab something for you. You can stay here.”
