by Maggie Blume

Her eyes meet mine over the rim of her cup. The conversation quiets. Last night settles between us. Not awkward. Just there.

Maddy sets down her coffee. "So."

"So."

"Are we going to talk about last night?" she asks.

"I had a really nice time."

Her expression softens. "So did I."

"And I don't regret kissing you."

"Good." Her smile grows. "Because I don't regret it either."

Her knee brushes mine beneath the table. This time I know it isn't an accident. I leave mine where it is.

"So where does that leave us?"

It's a fair question. I reach across the table and hold out my hand. She looks at it, then places hers in mine.

"I'd like to see you again."

One eyebrow rises. "You see me all the time."

"Not at the farm."

That quiets her. Maddy's smile returns.

"I'd like that too."

"There are a couple places we supply that you might like."

"Restaurants?"

"Farm-to-table. Millhaven has one. Another opened outside Ashford last year."

Her interest sharpens immediately. "You supply them both?"

"Produce, herbs. Some seasonal fruit."

"We should probably try them."

"Probably."

"For professional reasons."

"Of course."

"Market research."

"Very important."

Her mouth twitches. "I take my work seriously, Martinez."

"I've noticed."

"Then you understand the sacrifice I'm willing to make."
