Falling for the Grumpiest Protector
Page 61
I call back, "No, it's not."
Silence. I swallow.
"Carry on."
Nothing. Not a sound. Which is somehow worse.
I peek around the edge of the crates. Martinez is standing exactly where he was, his hands resting on top of the shovel. And he's smiling. Not almost smiling. Smiling.
I realize how beautiful his smile is.
Oh no. I have to get out of here.
I turn and walk quickly toward the parking area. Fine. I run.
I get to Emma's truck as quickly as I can, climb into the passenger seat, and shut the door behind me. Emma will be here any minute. Any minute. She'll finish with the dog, come back to the truck, and we'll leave. I will never speak of this again. Especially not to Martinez. Possibly not to myself.
I stare straight ahead.
A face appears at the passenger window.
I jump.
"Good grief!"
Martinez grins through the glass. I press a hand to my chest.
"What is wrong with you?"
His grin deepens. I lower the window.
"Do you always sneak up on women sitting in parked cars?"
"No."
"Well, you scared me."
"Come on."
I stare at him.
"Where?"
"You'll see."
"That is not reassuring."
He steps back from the truck.
"Come on, Hart."
I don't move.
"Are you taking me somewhere to kill me?"
"Tempting, but no."
I blink.
