"No. I'm enjoying this."
"There's nothing to enjoy."
Jack smiles. I hate when he does that. It usually means he thinks he knows something I don't. Or worse, something I do.
"She thought you were the hired help."
"She thought I was lying."
"That too."
I stack another tomato into the crate.
"Did you need something?"
"No."
"Then go away."
He doesn't. His smile fades.
"She looks exactly like Lily."
My hands stop. There it is.
"Yeah."
At the funeral, I knew Madison was Lily's twin. I'd seen enough family pictures over the years, usually when Lily was showing somebody something Noah had done and somehow ended up three years back in her camera roll. But knowing and seeing are different things. For half a second, grief played a trick on me. Then Madison looked straight at me. And the resemblance stopped being the first thing I saw. Same face. Completely different woman.
"I stared at her at the funeral," I say.
"A lot of people did."
"She noticed."
"I gathered that."
"She thinks I'm a jerk."
Jack considers it.
"That may not be entirely related to the staring."
I look at him. He laughs.
"Just saying."
I pick up another tomato.
"You done?"
"Almost."
I should know better than to ask.
"You called her Your Highness."
I look at him.
