Fated to the Grotesque

“Read the note, Meeky,” Huff suggested, warming the stone chambers of my heart. “He explains everything much better than he is now.” The Heechu winked his eye at her. It was hard to tell if it was a wink or blink, but I think my lassie got the idea behind the action.

“Okay, enough dawdling people.” The witch flounced from her seat and snapped her fingers, an aqua, shimmering oval displacing the air in front of her. “I’m going to super charge the protection duckies, gather as many witches I can, and portal into some fairytales to see if they’ll give us their support. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”

I laughed. “Impressive, witch.”

“Mo, wait,” Miko called, causing her bestie to halt mid step into the portal.

“What’s up?”

“I don’t know how I’ll,” Miko’s eyes bounced from me to Huff, “we’ll ever be able to replay you for this.”

Monstera’s expression softened. “No need, Babycakes. Now, go catch up on some fucking sleep. You look like shit.”

“Aw, how so sweet of you to notice,” I prodded, laughter poorly veiled in my voice.

Miko sighed but offered Monstera a small smile. “That’s my fated bestie right there.”

CHAPTER 33

Her Mistake

MIKO

Istared at the crumpled, folded note sitting on my coffee table like it might not contain life changing words, and rubbing my temples even though it did nothing to staunch the building headache inside my skull.

I was insanely grateful that Monstera offered, no, demanded to help Bane and I, not to mention the entire race of Heechus. It still felt like I wasn't doing enough. There had to be something I could do, human or not.

My eyes narrowed on Bane’s note, the longer I left it unread, the more I swear it mocked me. Who the hell was I kidding…I couldn’t stay upset with my grotesque. As if he could sense my wavering emotions, Huff winked into my apartment, grabbed the object in question with a tail, hopped onto my leg, then tripped over his ear, holding it out to me.

I sighed deeply as his huge, adorable purple eye twinkled with mischief. “What are you doing here?”

The little Heechu huffed and I couldn't help but smile at him. “Offering you moral support. I am here as a friend, even though we both know I'm biased. I really do believe everything will be cleared up after you read what he wrote. Baney is a lot more emotional than he lets show.”

I nodded, taking the note from Huff, inhaling in a deep breath and exhaling slowly as I unfolded it.

Honeybee,

I am absolutely shite at this kind of thing, but I will try my bleedin’ best to explain. Expressing emotions doesn't come naturally to grotesques, especially one who is damaged like I am. That’s not an excuse and I don’t wish you to take it as such.

You're my mate and I need you in a way that defies my existence. A mate is more than just a title between lovers. It means that we are two halves of one soul, one cannot exist without the other. Finding you has repaired so much of the damage done to my mind, just being in your presence heals me.

What I mean to say…

I pushed my glasses up my nose, squinting at the paper and trying to decipher what he scribbled out. Nevertheless, I quickly dismissed it since Bane pressed the pen down so hard in an attempt to erase it he nearly tore the note.

I’m fucking this up.

You make me feel like I deserve to be loved, that perhaps there isn't something so vile or wrong with me that I deserved the misery of my clan abandoning me. For decades, the Heechus chiseled away at my hurts, yet it still hasn’t been enough. But now I firmly believe they helped smooth the way for you.

When I fell into that portal without you it felt as if something within my chest ripped free from my ribs, staying with you. The HHC had never opened a portal directly in front of me like that. I tried to keep a hold of you, but I didn't know what was happening and didn't want to crush you under a ton of stone, doing irreparable damage to your body.

I spent that week and a half without you. Fuck me. Honestly? I'm not even sure what I did. Let’s just say there was destruction and I nearly tore my wings from my back.

I gasped, a hand flying to my mouth. Huff winked onto my shoulder and leaned against my neck, silently offering support just as he promised.

Just ask Huff, he’ll tell you how much I worry over my family. No matter the circumstances, unintentionally or not, I hurt you and for that I am so fucking sorry, Honeybee. I will spend the rest of my days making it up to you in whatever manner you wish.

Your Mate,
