She takes a deep breath. “I’ve seen them without shirts. In the summer. At the park. At…events.” She swallows, her voice dropping. “I’ve seen you too.”
Right. I mean, that makes sense. It gets fucking hot here in the summer.
But the idea of Sutton’s eyes on my body suddenly cranks the temp in this kitchen up higher than anything I felt even in the middle of July.
Her eyes drop to my mouth, and now I’m itching to lose some clothes right now.
I drop my hand.
“A dragon could kick a teddy bear’s ass,” she says huskily.
Well…okay…so probably true. And I try really hard to downplay my ass-kicking ways. I try for light-hearted. “So dragons have some anger issues?”
Her gaze bounces back to mine. “They only do it when being protective. Of their…treasure.”
Jesus.
Is she inside my head? Does she actually get it? Get me?
“And that’s really ho…noble,” she says.
Oh, she was about to say hot.
She thinks that’s hot? Hell, even if she just thinks it’s noble, that makes me feel… fuck, I want to kiss her.
She swallows and asks, “So were you in the pantry guarding your treasure?” The corner of her mouth twitches. “Were you trying to protect your hoard of cereal bars? I had no idea they make that many different flavors.”
I blink.
One second we’re talking about dragons, then I’m thinking about kissing her, and now we’re talking about cereal bars?
“Uh…”
“Why were you in the pantry?” she asks.
And how does she know about my stash of cereal bars?
“Because somebody has been breaking into my house for the past two weeks and I want to know who.”
She blinks. “Oh. Right. You were, uh, trying to catch the casserole lady?”
The casserole lady. Right.
I give her a slow smile. “Yes, I was.”
“I thought you put up a camera.”
“I did. And somehow it hasn’t caught even the edge of a sleeve. Almost as if she knows it’s there.”
Which Sutton did.
Her eyebrows arch. “Huh. So you decided to hide in the pantry and jump out and scare the crap out of her?”
“Kind of. I guess it worked.”
“What do you mean?”
“I caught you.”
