The Trouble With You

Something about him makes me certain that if Lawson hits somebody, they deserve it.

“I would never hurt you, Sutton,” he says, his voice a little gruff. “Beckett has absolutely nothing to worry about there.”

“Exactly,” I say, with confidence. “So he’s being ridiculous.”

He doesn’t directly address that but says, “He cares about you. That’s a good thing.”

I nod. “Of course. Unless it starts to infringe on my independence and choices. And happiness.”

Again, there is a little flicker of something in his eyes, and I wonder if he likes the idea of being the cause of some of my happiness.

I can definitely tell him more about that if he would like to know.

“Lawson—”

“If you weren’t Beckett’s sister—” he says at the same time.

The back door bangs open just then, and Beckett stomps into the house, breathing hard, interrupting us.

I sigh. There is a zero percent chance that Lawson is going to continue whatever he was about to say now.

I am going to die wondering what the rest of that sentence would have been.

Beckett pulls off his headphones, taking in the scene.

“Law? Hey. What’s up?”

Lawson straightens.

I sigh softly. We weren’t doing anything but chatting and eating cinnamon rolls, but he’s acting like he feels guilty.

Then I stop.

Wait… does he feel guilty about something? Like what? Was he having some inappropriate thoughts, perhaps? Was he wishing we were doing more?

Are my cinnamon rolls making him horny too?

“I think you should put security cameras up outside,” Lawson says. “Brought some over. I can help install them.”

Right. The cameras.

“Cameras for what?” Beckett asks.

“To figure out who your stalker is,” Lawson says as if it’s obvious.

It kind of should be.

Beckett crosses to the refrigerator, pulls it open, and grabs a bottle of water. He bumps the fridge shut as he turns, twisting the lid off the bottle. He takes a long gulp, then shakes his head. “Nah, I’m good.”

Lawson casts me a glance, then looks back to Beckett. “I think we need to know.”

“Everything is totally okay,” Beckett says. “I have a woman adoring me. Nothing is more okay than that.”

I roll my eyes. That’s a very Beckett reaction.

“You don’t know who it is. She could be unhinged or dangerous,” Lawson says.

Beckett chuckles and takes another drink of water. After he swallows, he says, “I’ve seen photos, remember? At least of her body. She’s not very big. I think I can take her if it comes to that. And the wrestling match might be a lot of fun.”
