The Trouble With You

I put that guy in the hospital.

That one made the news and ended my career.

And I know that’s the incident that has Beckett worked up.

I’m sure if I told Beckett that every one of those times it was in defense of a woman, specifically my sister, he would understand. I also know that if I told him what my teammate did to my sister, he’d be on my side. He’d do the same for Sutton.

But I can’t talk about it because of the non-disclosure agreement I signed.

And because my sister has sworn me to secrecy forever.

“I would never hurt Sutton,” I say. That’s all I can say. Well, I guess I can add, “And fuck you for thinking otherwise.”

He scowls at me.

“Sutton doesn’t date at all,” Astrid points out. “Is that because of you?” she asks Beckett. “Because that is not okay, Beckett.”

“We don’t really…talk about that. At all. No. I wouldn’t do that.” Beckett suddenly seems flustered.

Maybe he’s remembering that Astrid’s not just his boss, but also one of his sister’s closest friends.

“Did you talk about Lawson with her?” Astrid asks.

“No. Not exactly.”

Astrid crosses her arms. “Explain.”

Beckett blows out a breath. “I saw her journal, okay?”

A collective “oooohhhh” goes through the locker room.

Astrid’s eyes go wide.

I feel my hand clenching into a fist. That is definitely not okay. “Excuse me?” I ask.

Astrid shoots me a frown, then turns back to Beckett. “You read her journal? Seriously?”

Beckett throws up his hands in surrender. “I didn’t know that’s what it was. It was lying open on the kitchen table. I thought she’d left me a note or instructions for dinner or something to do around the house. She does that.” He looks around the room. “She does that,” he repeats with emphasis.

“But you kept reading?” I ask.

I have no idea if my sister keeps a journal. I don’t need to know that. And if she did, I would definitely not read it.

“It wasn’t super long.” He shoots me a glare.

“What did it say?” Alex asks.

Astrid looks at him and shakes her head. “We don’t need to know that.”

“Beckett is going after Lawson during a game,” Alex says. “It feels pertinent. If it’s something stupid, maybe we can help Beckett get some perspective.”

“The only perspective for him to have is that he should leave Sutton’s shit alone,” I say.

“See?” Beckett gestures at me. “That just makes you seem guilty.”

“Guilty of what?” I ask.

“Teaching her all about sex!”
