I looked up from my tablet, frowning. “Why?”
“You’re never here this early.”
“Just trying to get a jump start on the day,” I said with a shrug.
Garrett chuckled. “Bullshit.”
“What? I am.”
His response was thick with skepticism. “Okay.”
I put my tablet aside. “What?”
“You’ve only been here a few months, right?”
“About six months.”
“You’re literally never this early. It’s not like you’re coming in late every day, but you never beat me in. So what gives? Something’s going on. I can tell. Is this about your ex?”
I closed my eyes for a second, pinching the bridge of my nose with my fingertips. “It’s not about my ex.”
“Then who? Someone’s got you worked up.”
“Nobody—”
“If you don’t want to talk about it, I’ll let it go, but don’t lie to me.”
The words felt huge in my chest, as if the urge to tell him about the kiss, about my feelings for Kieran, was too big for my body and it was going to burst out of me soon if I didn’t release the pressure. I took a slow breath. “You know about the new roommate, right?”
Garrett nodded. “Your sister’s friend, right? The one she brought in a few weeks ago? He’s cute.”
Possessiveness coiled in my stomach and I forced myself to stay calm and let it go. “I kissed him,” I said finally, relief flooding my body as I spoke.
“Holy shit.” The smile on Garrett’s face was wide and bright, his tone light with laughter. “And?”
“And what? Nothing. I kissed him. That’s all that happened.”
“Was he into it?”
I nodded. “Definitely.”
“What’s your plan then?”
Confused, I furrowed my brow and shook my head. “I don’t have a plan.”
“Well, you’d better figure it out. Have you told Lena?”
The thought of telling my sister I was attracted to her best friend was… not great. “I haven’t.”
“Are you going to?”
I let that percolate for a moment. “Probably not. There’s nothing to tell, right? It was just a kiss.”
“And have you talked to him about it?”
I laughed a little and shook my head. “I left without speaking to him this morning. Like a coward.”
Garrett snorted a laugh. “Nice job.” He was quiet for a moment before speaking again. “Well, you should probably decide where you want things to go before you go home tonight. Unless you’re going to avoid him forever, which I wouldn’t recommend.”
