Don’t Tie Me Down

I give her a long look. ”Do you really need to ask that question?”

She nods as if suddenly understanding. “Ah. You’re talking about Guy.”

“Yep. That’s the one.”

Greer glances between us and smiles, leaving me to wonder just how much Kira’s told her about us. Does she know the way we met? Does she know what we did last night?

“Well, that’s good to know.” Her eyes dart to Kira, and she nudges her with her elbow. “This one was pretty wild in her younger years too. And I think she turned out alright.”

Now that she mentions it, there are quite a few similarities between Kira and Guy—though Kira isn’t nearly as obnoxious. They’re both impulsive, terrible with details, and incapable of finishing one thought before their brains race to the next. And, of course, there’s the trail of chaos they leave behind everywhere they go.

I tuck that little revelation into my mental file to unpack later, then turn my attention back to playing host. “Sasha, can I get you anything to drink? I have soda and—”

“Dude, you didn’t tell me you were throwing a pool party!” I hear Guy’s voice before I see him come from behind the house. “What, did my invitation get lost in the mail—” His words break off, and he stops in his tracks when he comes face-to-face with Kira’s sister.

I tighten the grip on my spatula, staring daggers in my little brother’s direction. “Is there something you need or…?”

Ignoring me, Guy’s eyes dart between Kira and Greer like a pinball as he seems to piece it all together. His smile is wide as he holds out a hand. “I’m Guy, it’s nice to meet you…”

“Kira’s much older sister, Greer,” she says, taking his hand.

Wincing, Guy shakes his hand out, as if easing the sting, and I have to bite back my laugh. It isn’t every day I get a front row seat to my cocky youngest brother getting rejected by a hot woman.

“If you think that’s supposed to scare me off, then you’re in for a rude awakening.” He waggles his brows, not hiding his obvious perusal of her. Greer just rolls her eyes.

This time my tone is lighter when I say, “Again. Is there something you needed?”

Guy ignores me and turns to examine the snacks laid out on the table. He pops a piece of watermelon in his mouth and lets out a moan, the juice dripping out of the side of his cheek. He takes another bite and finishes chewing before finally answering my question. “I was bored. Luka and Scout are going to the lake and Jett’s obviously spending the day working, like the freak he is. Mom and Dad are out of town visiting Leo and Ivy, and I didn’t want to spend the holiday alone.”

I pin him with a stare. “Come on, Guy, with your roster, I’m not really sure you know the meaning of the word.”

He cuts his eyes to Greer, as if my truthful words may actually be cockblocking him from his chance with her.

I actually chuckle at the absurdity. “Let me guess, the girl you had lined up canceled on you at the last minute and everyone else already made plans?”

He shoots me an annoyed glare. “She met someone, actually. Some fucking tool she just started working with.” He shakes his head. “But they seem to be happy, or whatever, so good for her, I guess.” He turns his attention back to Greer and flashes her a wolfish grin. “Which means, I have an opening on my roster. If you’re interested?”

Her lip curls in repulsion. “I think I just threw up in my mouth.”

“Come on, let’s go get set up under the umbrella,” Kira says, pulling her sister away before these two can exchange any more pleasantries.

Once they’re out of earshot, I grab Guy by the collar of his T-shirt and pull him closer. “Dude. What the fuck are you doing showing up here unannounced?”

He holds up his hands in surrender. “Whoa. My bad. I didn’t realize you were taking things to the next level.”

“It’s not like that. She just wanted to spend the holiday with her family. That’s all.” I release my grip on his shirt and shove him. “You’re the one who showed up and made it fucking weird.”

Guy rubs his chest and winces. “How did you get so freakishly strong? I think you ripped my nipple off.” He peeks beneath the neck of his shirt and seems relieved when he finds his nipple is still intact. “Can I just stay and hang out until this evening? I promise not to hit on the sister anymore,” he says. “Unless she gives me an opening.”

I glance over as Kira and Greer coat themselves in sunscreen while the kids take turns jumping in the pool. I could use a little help keeping the kids occupied so Greer and Kira can actually spend some time together. I think I remember Kira mentioning that they play soccer.

“Fine, but you’re on kid duty. And if you as much as wink at her, then you’re gone. Got it?”

“No problem,” Guy agrees, a victorious smile curling at his lips.

I really hope he doesn’t make me regret this…

We spend the rest of the afternoon playing in the pool.
