As if I needed anything else to worry about this summer, now I’m actually going to have to do all this shit.
Because, like it or not, my fate lies in Marguerite’s hands.
She claps her hands. “Now, let’s go over the rules, shall we?”
That night, I lie in bed, too wired to fall asleep, thinking about my first two homework assignments.
Step outside yourself—take on a role you’ve never played before.
Start something new and finish it.
I stare at the book on the nightstand. What the hell does that even mean? Our next call is in two weeks, and I’m going to need to be able to prove to her that I’m taking this seriously.
My oversized T-shirt clings to my sweat-soaked skin as I thrash from side to side, unable to get comfortable. I’ve already cranked the AC down as low as it can go without it freezing up…ask me how I know.
Evie softly snores in the top bunk above me. What I’d give right now to have a child’s ability to sleep in any conditions.
The flimsy bunk bed creaks as I kick off my blanket and carefully worm myself from under Matilda, trying not to wake either of them as I reach for my phone.
Right now, I could use a little something to take the edge off—just a little distraction to tide me over until I can think clearly tomorrow morning.
Before I know it, I find myself mindlessly scrolling on the Ashford Falls Facebook group, a gem I stumbled upon during one of my earlier sleepless nights, where apparently all the residents have taken to airing their grievances.
I’m ten pages deep, on the edge of the bed—quite literally—trying to hold my laughter as I read the captivating saga of Tater, the neighborhood cat escaping capture for the third time this week, when a new post pops up and refreshes the feed.
“Dammit,” I whine, scrolling back down the page, but the Tater post is nowhere to be found.
Who posts in the community Facebook group at three in the morning anyway?
Curiosity gets the best of me, and I scroll back up to read the post.
